My dear Blackwood
I have just returned from the city not a little puzzled how the misunderstanding about the poem arose, because if you did not get Mrs. Lewes's letter, Mr. Simpson must have got mine. I hope it has not put you to any serious inconvenience!
When in the city I saw Tr'fcbner who says Ticknor and Fields of Boston would give Mrs. Lewes a good sum for permission to print the poem in the Atlantic Monthly simultaneously with its appearance in Maga if you would not object to the entrance into England of the 250 copies which the Atlantic subscribers would receive in due course i.e. a fortnight or so after the appearance in Maga. This was done with a poem of Swinburne's and a novel of Charles Reade's and I do not suppose that coming so long after Maga and in so small a way there would be any objection, but I should like to be sure from you on the point before selling the proofs. 35
My desire is to publish in the May number. This will give us plenty of time for revision, and will bring the poem out "in the season."
Mrs. Lewes read it aloud to our son Charles last night and was highly gratified by the effect. I wish Maga's subscribers could hear it so read!
Hail, sleet, and snow made the city not lovely this morning. I was breakfasting with Sir Henry Holland and Lord Dufferin 36 otherwise I should not have put my nose outside the door.
