My dear Blackwood
If it is not too late I wish you would insert the following sentence in my paper. At that passage where I am speaking of the paradoxes presented by fishes, find some available place to wedge in this: --
"And although in general Fish are neither vocal nor eloquent, there are many of them capable of uttering sounds: there are Fish that snarl, Fish that grunt, like a pig, and Fish that send forth the cuckoo's note. Aristotle knew this, and Johannes von M'fcller has recently explained the mechanism whereby it is accomplished." (M'fcller's Archiv f'fcr Anat. 1857 p. 269.)
I think the passage will best come in just before the close where I speak of Fishes, bisexual and metamorphic. 323
Ever faithfully yours
G. H. Lewes.
