My dear Blackwood,
You have been so uniformly agreeable in editorial relations with me that I should be sorry indeed, if any inconvenience arose from my papers; and beg you will decide respecting the publication of No. III next month entirely according to your own convenience. As a mere memorandum I would suggest that the interruption of a series is always undesirable, and peculiarly does this apply just now when people are flocking to the coast and are more likely to take an interest in marine articles than at any other time. But you have doubtless weighed that consideration, and I repeat, if there are other papers of more temporary interest, or if you wish to oblige their writers, don't let me stand in the way, but decide as your own judgement and wishes incline, assured that I shall entertain no doubt of the propriety of the decision.
Your bits of Madeleine Smith amused me much. What utter deadness of moral feeling! -- she is so unmoral that she produces in me the effect of a wild beast. I should like to "anatomize her and see what breeds about her heart." 932
George Eliot has not left. Indeed it is owing to his resolution of staying here till next Friday 933 that I am not already in Richmond. On Friday however I make "positively last appearance" on the sands of Gorey.
G.E. begs me to send his kind regards. We were both amused with the divination of the Manx Seer and his friend Liggers. 934 Quel nom! How can you wonder at the anonymous being desired, when its removal would disclose a somewhat antique Liggers who had sown wild oats in Manx society, and was now subdued to the grave proprieties of Maga.
