My dear Blackwood
I came back yesterday morning after a delightful trip, 962 and after the greatest pleasure a father's heart can feel, in seeing my boys robust in health, greatly improved, and perfectly happy. Janet No. IV awaited me, and having read it I dispatch it by this post together with the last Sea-Side Studies. The conclusion is not so amusing in matter as I could have wished; but if the substance be a little severe, the discovery therein announced will be sufficiently startling to excite the attention of all philosophic readers -- and if the paper should be thought uninteresting it is a consolation to know that it will be the last.
I am much pleased that you concur with me respecting the illustrations and I will get from Monti 963 an exact estimate of the expense. I shall alter the papers considerably, and remove the purely magazinic portions, without touching what is popular and gilds the scientific pill. The additions will be mainly directed towards making the book useful to seaside visitors, so as to have a permanent value. There is no book which really instructs the student in many of the indispensable trifles -- and from my own experience of the want of such information I hope to be able to save others much of the trouble and annoyance I felt in not knowing where to look, and how to set about my work.
The additions will not add much to the quantity already printed, when the excisions are taken into account. But until I set about altering I can't say with accuracy how much new matter there will be. Believe me,

Last night I saw G.E. to whom I gave your letter and checque. He wants to close the series with Janet. But as he is to write to you today on the point, I need say nothing, except that his reasons for closing seem to me valid, bearing all things in mind.
