My dear Blackwood
I came home last night from Helps's hospitable and delightful mansion where Christmas has been very jolly, 1046 and my arrival was saluted by your very pleasant letters and very liberal enclosure. The approbation of men like Simpson 1047 is indeed gratifying; and your unexpected increase of the honorarium was a practical compliment which had an eloquence of its own.
G.E. has a fine bit of luck in that notice in the Times, and the encouragement will materially help him in his new story. Though the critic is I think quite solitary in preferring [Gilfil] to [Amos] and [Janet]
I was interested by what you said of Stephens 1048 ( -- whose Book of the Farm by the way I have not thanked you for sending, which was the more ungrateful as the book is really very useful) and I shall be glad to make his acquaintance.
The index seems admirable and will be a real addition to the book. 1049 I have written to Monti about the illustrations which were promised a month ago and told him to send them without further delay.
