June 78.
My dear Mr. Hogg
It was very kind of you to think of me and had I been in town I should for your sake have gone to hear your prot'e9g'e9, but the concerts to which alone I am seductible by now are those of my own wood -- nightingales at night, finches, thrushes, blackbirds by day. The roar of London is happily distant now and the heat of society exchanged for the delicious warmth of nature!
We were both knocked up by London gaieties and Royalties and have said adieu to all for another five months.
Yours very truly
G. H. Lewes.
When last I heard from Ripley his sight had almost recovered its healthy state.
