Gentlemen
In reply to your letter of the 18 August apropos of Canada we shall be much obliged to you if you would make all the necessary arrangements, paying us 200£ additional as you propose. 47 This will save us trouble.
Mr. Blackwood is so very uneasy about our arrangement lest extracts should creep into our newspapers before we appear here that Mrs. Lewes has been for some time on the point of asking you to rescind it. But I think on due consideration of the case both our interests may be served by your publishing larger weekly instalments 48 than you proposed -- and indeed I think on a revision of the matter you will see that 'bd a volume ought only to occupy 5 weeks in publishing. This was your original estimate -- viz. 30 weeks for 3 volumes. If you can manage this -- while you will have the undisturbed priority -- the book not appearing in America until your last weekly instalment also appears -- we shall be tolerably secure against more than an extract or two since if you begin to print on the 4 November and we publish on the 1st December our part can't reach America till the 15th or later when you would have completed your publication; but on the other hand we could only have received in England the two numbers you had printed.
Can you therefore manage to publish each part in 5 or at the utmost 6 numbers? Please let me know about this.
