Christmas Day 1867.
Dear Smith
Health and happiness for you and yours! is the prayer offered up at the Priory.
It is not impossible that we may see you this afternoon, if you are not at Brighton, or not absorbed in hospitalities, but I don't mean to be anticipated, so I send my [Merry Christmas] d'avance.
I am making a rash and rapid flight to Germany on Friday -- anxious to see whether the German anatomists have made any bricks that will suit my purpose. I am on the track of a great discovery!
I shall be back by the 12 January. Mrs. Lewes remains at home. She bids me say all manner of sweet things.
