October 1876.
Dear Elma
I shall someday find you a letter of Macaulay's but meanwhile I have come upon the only two very precious autographs that I have hitherto thought worth preserving for myself -- a letter of Shelley to Keats and a letter of Sanson the executioner. 543 But the thought that they would give you pleasure is irresistible -- so I part with them not with reluctance -- be sure of that -- but with joy. I also add one of Franz Liszt and one for the sake of the beautiful writing of Varnhagen von Ense.
We have been paying a visit to a friend in Cambridgeshire, one whom we are very fond of you may be sure, as it is difficult to get Madonna away from her own home. It was extremely agreeable and now we are back again at work -- I printing my new volume, she reading my m.s. and proofs when she is not absorbed in her Hebrew literature. By the way we have both been much gratified at the fervent admiration of the Chief Rabbi and other learned Jews, and their astonishment that a Christian should know so much about them and enter so completely into their feelings and aspirations. This is all the more welcome because the Christian public -- at least a large part of it -- is decidedly unsympathetic towards that part of D.D.
We heard from Edith yesterday. Her brother is about to be married (not Augustus but the clergyman) 544 so that her mother will come and live with her.
Send us word how you and dear Roly are getting on and give my love to Mrs. Menzies.
Ever your affectionate
G. H. L.
