My dear Sir
Mrs. Lewes (who for the last seven years has ceased to be Miss Evans) has done her utmost to keep from every other publicity than that of her books, with which alone the outside world has any right to concern itself. A portion of the English Press has however, with questionable delicacy, refused the author's right to remain unknown, and refused to accept the name which each successive title page, from the Clerical Scenes to Silas Marner has shown to be the name she has chosen for her public appearances. Unable to prevent others from writing about her she steadily declines in any way assisting in attempts of which she cannot approve.
Entre nous, I may mention that she is not the daughter of a dissenting clergyman, but was born and bred a churchwoman. 790
