My dear Pigott
I had been wondering why you the most friendly of correspondents did not answer my letter, and supposed your answer had been lost on the road. The letter just received explains your silence but in a very painful way. After so many years and so much money to have parted altogether with the "Leader" is really a hard case. 392 I should have been pleased to hear that a share had been sold, so as to lighten your burden, but to lose all --! Let me hope at any rate that the terms were favorable.
And now what are you going to do? With talents such as your's, and with so many friends -- "everybody likes Pigott" -- a distinguished place ought to be won; and perhaps after all the present ill-turn of affairs may be the most fortunate turning point in your life, by calling up all your energies for the struggle. Write to me at Dresden poste restante, and tell me all personal matters which you would tell if we were seated once more round the mahogany at Richmond, just before Una furtiva lagrima 393 is to be sung in a style which makes me wild with envy. Many such mahoganys will we sit round!
I have only just returned from Switzerland where I found the boys in splendid condition and very happy. Although every one is so kind to us here that we shall leave Munich with regret, the climate is so detestable that we shall leave it with joy. We start on the 6th for the Tyrol -- Vienna -- Prague -- and Dresden where we shall abide for some weeks. I will give you an account of our voyage when you have written.
Is Galloway 394 still the publisher? If not, will you ask his successor to send me the Athenaeum and Saturday poste restante to Dresden regularly after this week? I don't know whether the new proprietor will send me the Leader; but if he does not, I shall not care to pay for it, unless you continue writing. The other papers, of course, I pay for. Arrange this with Galloway, or successor, for me.
I have done very little writing since I came here, mainly on account of health, but I have done an immense deal of work in the laboratories of Liebig, Bischoff, and Harless, and feel myself greatly benefited by the visit.
Marian begs me to send her very kind regards, and with remembrances to the Owens, 395 Owen Jones, Wilkie, Baynes, 396 etc. Believe me
