My dear Pigott
You can imagine the real pleasure it was to both of us to hear that your misfortune had at any rate got a silver lining to its cloud, and that you were seriously devoting your talents to profitable work. 397 You know what we both think of you; and how often we have [lectured] you for not writing more. It is therefore hopeful to see you in full swing.
We left Munich on the 6th and had an exquisite journey through the mountains, valleys, and lakes of the Tyrol -- drinking in beauty to the intoxicating point every day. Our voyage down the Danube was marred by bad weather. In Vienna we were three crowded days -- only making one visit, and that to the great anatomist Hyrtl, whose "injections" are the marvel of Europe. These he showed us very kindly, and we spent a delightful couple of hours with him. From Vienna to Prague -- and in that superb city we spent a delicious day. I don't know whether you know Dresden; it is the most elegant and habitable of German cities, and after Munich a paradise. We have the whole suite of rooms forming the 2e 'e9tage, our front windows looking on a delicious all'e9e in which nothing but foliage, sky, and promenaders are to be seen, and birds to be heard. For this we pay 18/- a week! But if we lived in a garret the diving gallery would make Dresden a paradise -- such pictures! such pictures! such! Oh!!!!
Remember me kindly to Cook 398 and ask him whether he has had a review of Seaside Studies yet -- I have been anxiously awaiting the same. Remember me also to Sandars, but excuse my not having written for the C. R. 399 I have written &unknown;scarcely at all&unknown; nothing but science my &unknown;whole&unknown; time has been much absorbed in seeing, and experimenting; varied by headachy incompetence.
Since Galloway has left, the nonarrival of my papers is explained. Would you be good enough to ask Mr. Jones of the S[aturday] R[eview] if he would send me the S. R. here, from the 10th July (which I have not received) till the 21 August; placing the same to my account? The Athenaeum I can do without but I must see my Saturdays especially now you are there.
Kindest regards to the O[wen] J[ones]'s -- and tell Mrs. O. J. that I shall set about her commission at once. Polly will add a word on the other side.
