Tuesday.
Dearest Charles
The enclosed is more cheerful than the last -- the worms seem to have vanished again.
Nothing has occurred since you were here except the smashing of our Victoria. The horse was frightened by the sudden puffs of the locomotive while Burkin had left him to take off his coat -- and away he dashed round the sweep and up the steep bank -- making havoc of plants and shrubs -- came down at last with a smash on the gravel -- was not hurt himself but put the Victoria in a sad plight. 141 However one is thankful to have only money damages -- not broken bones -- as the result!
On Thursday we start for Six Mile Bottom -- Tourg'e9neff is to be there and the Halls have seduced us from Thursday till Monday. 142 We shall enjoy the visit, no doubt, but yet don't enjoy moving. This place is getting lovelier and more loved every week. As to health we have been better, worse, and better again.
The picture of you shopping is r'e9jouissant -- but you are right as to the advantages of direct purchases!
The George Eliot Birthday book is one of Main's doing -- and is Blackwood's spec. Langford will give you a copy if you ask him.
Ever your loving
Pater.
Tell Gertrude with my love that I find the list of subscriptions charities and other outgoings has grown to such a considerable sum that I must begin to draw in, and so after this year closes, I must cease the payments for Mary's child. 143
