Monday.
My dear Main
Our fruitless efforts to get a suitable house for the summer have all but decided us to go abroad and try the effect of mountain air and a German Bath for Mrs. Lewes's recruitment -- much needed I am sorry to say. We go to Oxford on a visit to Jowett on the 7th (we were at Cambridge last week, and it would have done your heart good to see the silent worship of some of the best young men there) and then shall decide where we are to pass the summer. If we decide to remain I will let you know but I do not think that in any case I can undertake to look over your M.S. I feel quite assured from what I saw that you have done what I could have wished; and you had better lose no time but send it at once to Chapman and ask him to get on with the printing so as to be ready by October.
I am at present more than usually bothered -- not only by those business arrangements about a new house for the autumn to be settled, lawyers seen, etc. but I have to get a new publisher for my "Problems" -- Blackwood has taken the alarm, and stopped the printing. Although this bothers me by the waste of three months which it involves I am not really sorry for the change of publisher. B's views on philosophy and religion are too diametrically opposed to mine for perfect comfort in such arrangements. -- This makes no alteration in our friendship though I think he has not acted with his usual considerateness and sagacity. Mrs. Lewes was as usual pleased with your letter. Perhaps we shall see Ritter in Switzerland.
