The Priory | Monday.
My dear Main
I felt sure of you! -- After writing I made three attempts to see Chapman and finally succeeded not only in seeing him but in getting his promise to send you the money at once. Keep him to it!
I love your friend for that mot of his "George Eliot has become a necessity."
The Problems seem eminently promising -- 800 copies having been sold already and only the shabby notice in the Athenaeum and the good one in the Sat[urday] Rev[iew] as yet. 901 The pleasantest thing I have heard about it is that people not versed in such subjects find it clear and interesting. Mrs. Lewes heard yesterday from Miss Hennell who said her sister had read the book and found "she was the bigger for it -- she knew not why."
Your wishes have run in company with our plans -- we are to spend Christmas with that Scotch Family, where the young men and women call us uncle and aunt and I believe love us as such. Mr. Sellar says of the girls (his cousins) that their religion begins with the credo "I believe in Mr. and Mrs. L."
A Merry Christmas to you and may Johnson meet with the welcome it deserves!
