My dear Druce
Letters such as yours are the best rewards an author can get. I must suppose that my exposition has been faulty in some respect since you misapprehend me about universality and necessity. I certainly did think they were stated in terms of experience, and refer you especially to 'a7'a7 167-183 to show that I am not converting a postulate of practice into an axiom of reason. The experience which tells us that a thing is what it is, tells us that it must be what it is universally so long as the conditions are unaltered. That is the only universality and necessity I recognize and I especially decry the metempirical uniformity of Nature or universality which is not the uniformity of uniform conditions, the universality of conditions universalized.
Give our love to your wife and our hopes that the sea breezes are cooperating with Problems in giving vigour to your constitution.
