MS: Yale. Hitherto unpublished.
Today Blackwood dined with us. He brought an amusing correspondence about the authorship of Adam Bede, which is the great literary mystery of the day. It appears that subscriptions of money have actually been set on foot [for] Liggins the supposed author. Blackwood urged that the secret should stedfastly be kept, at least until after the next book. He also advised against our idea of putting Charley into the publishing business. After dinner we walked with him through the park and wood to Putney Station where he departed and we walked home.
