MS: Yale. Hitherto unpublished.
Monday 23rd.
Since the 30th of last month, when we reached Holly Lodge, I have been busy with arrears of correspondence and with arrangements for Charles. Among the two or three people I spoke to about him was Anthony Trollope, and of him I only asked information, yet he most kindly interested himself and wrote to the Duke of Argyll 598 for a nomination to compete for a vacancy in the Post Office -- which was granted on Friday last. We have been much occupied training Charley for the examination, and I have dictated to him every day. Yet in spite of this work and distraction I have finished my Introduction and Memoirs of the Dramatists for Brockhaus: £50 easily earned!
