MS: Yale. Hitherto unpublished.
Wednesday 2nd November.
Read Leuret: Anat. Comp. du Syst'e8me Nerveux, 371 and continued the rewriting of my chapter on the Spinal Chord. Was interrupted by a visit from George Smith who came to say he accepted my terms for the series of papers which I have planned "Studies in Animal Life." The terms are these: 25/ a page for the magazine, and half profits on reprinting -- the copyright to remain with me. He wishes to open the series in his first number and I promised to be ready. Resumed work. Went into town. Bankers. London Library -- where I looked out a pile of books which will be useful for my "Studies." -- In the evening Polly read "Tom Brown at Oxford" in Macmillan's Magazine, 372 and I began Michelet's L'insecte. 373
