Wednesday 4th.
The last week has not been so agreeable. Since Friday there has been occasionally a thunderstorm, and since Sunday only gleams of sunlight interrupted with fierce rain. Yesterday three families fled from the hotel in a panic because a Dr. here had foolishly told them they had better escape while they could, a great battle at Frankfurt being inevitable. After ordering carriages and driving away as far as Ems they met English travellers on the road who pointed out to them the absurdity of their fears and that even should a battle be fought Schwalbach was as safe a place as they could find. Whereupon they returned to the old quarters. Their panic without absolutely communicating itself to us caused us to consider what were the conditions and whether it would not be better to place ourselves out of all danger of an interruption of the route. We decided however on remaining, or rather on going to Schlangenbad as originally proposed. -- The rain has greatly interfered with our enjoyment of this place though we have walked as much as before, and the walks are surprisingly varied and beautiful.
