Read Rohault's System of Natural Philosophy and was interested to find him anticipating the dynamic theory of heat, and in his own person colorblindness. Continued my rewriting of Aristotle.
George Smith called with a proposition to publish Polly's novel in weekly numbers at 6d with one plate. He also spoke to me about the editorship of the Cornhill Magazine which Thackeray has resigned. 48 I declined taking any responsible position, but agreed that if he would edit it responsibly, get a subeditor, and some other adviser of whom I approved, I would act as consulting editor. He is to think over the proposition.
Polly and I then went to the Society of Antiquaries to see the collection of autographs of celebrated Englishmen, with their portraits. This was very interesting -- especially some of the portraits; and Scott's M.S.S. of Peveril of the Peak and the Black Dwarf. In the evening we went over to the Marylebone Theatre to see Webster in the Dead Heart 49 -- wretched piece; but he was good.
