Sunday 5 May.
We went this morning to hear Congreve deliver the opening Lecture on [Positivism.] 611 Lord Houghton, Trevelyan, 612 Butler Johnstone, 613 Lord and Lady Amberley, 614 Mrs. P. Taylor, Beesly, Harrison, etc. there with some sixty or seventy others. Introduced Lady Amberley to Polly; she wanted us to go back and lunch with her; but this was against rules, so she is to come to us next Sunday. Chat with Forman and Miss Sella. 615 The Theodore Martins, Beesly and Rallston 616 came in the afternoon.
Monday 6th May.
Continued the writing of my Prolegomena. 617 Called on Shirley Brooks 618 -- out but found his wife in. Dined with Morley at the Garrick. Browning, Forster, FitzJames Stephen, Beesly, Meredith, Greenwood, Macmillan, 619 Trollope, and three or four others there. Browning told us that when Tennyson heard Wordsworth was about to publish the [Prelude] he said he knew one line must be in it somewhere and it was:
One Mr. Wilkinson, a clergyman. 620

Finished my Prolegomena! Had a long ramble in the Park. Dined at the Amberleys -- Lord and Lady Russell, 621 Lady Airlie, 622 Sir J. Bowring, W. E. Forster, Prof. Frazer, 623 Dr. Hanna, 624 Crompton, 625 and several others at dinner and in the evening. Lady Amberley more charming than ever, but her sister Lady Airlie even pleased me more -- perhaps because her talk was mainly about Polly, whom she seems thoroughly to appreciate. Lord Russell talked to me about Spain. Home at 12.
