Christmas Day.
Last night we had a delightful family party: Mother and Lizzie, Gertrude and the aunts, Miss Marshall and Bertie, who is home for a holiday and who delights us with his manifest improvement, and his general amiability. We acted charades and sang both before and at supper and were very merry. Today Dr. Stummer called in the morning; Bessie Parkes and Isa Craig in the afternoon. We dined alone; the boys dining out and our Christmas dinner postponed till Tuesday.
Yesterday I received a charming letter from Trollope who I feared would be very much disgusted with me for having withdrawn from the editorship of a new Fortnightly Review which he wanted me to take and which I had accepted rather imprudently, seduced by the prospect of a good income and pleasant work. But my fears lest it should be too much for my health, and disturb our domestic habits, have made me resign. 300 This is the second editorship I have declined since my return from Malvern. A third position, namely that of adviser to George Smith in the conduct of the Pall Mall Gazette, an evening paper, I have accepted, because it entails no responsibility, very little work and that purely consultative, and is paid for at the rate of £300 a year. This helps to replace, in some degree, my loss of the Cornhill.
Friday 30 December.
Wrote a review of Southwood Smith for the Saturday. 301 Went down to Smith to consult about a prospectus of the Pall Mall Gazette and other matters. Then went to dine with Danby Seymour 302 to meet Trollope, Oliphant 303 and Chapman, with whom we were to discuss the Fortnight[ly]. I have given a provisional adhesion to the proposal of my editing this, they offering me a subeditor and every facility.
