Friday 15th.
To-day as I had to lecture this evening at the General Post Office on "Life from the Simple Cell to Man," I interrupted the writing of my article on Recent Natural History Books, 697 on which I have been recently engaged, and rewrote the notes for my Lecture. Polly and I then went to the Zoological Gardens. After dinner Charley and I started for the Post Office. In Mr. Scudamore's 698 room where we waited I was surprised and delighted to see Herbert Williams whom I have not seen for two and twenty years. We talked over the old student days when we used to sit up reading, writing, and drawing, and making our coffee at 2 in the morning. The Lecture was very well attended, and was immensely successful. The audience never manifested the slightest inattention or want of interest. Trollope, Yates, and Turner 699 complimented me afterwards, but the real compliment was in the attention of the audience. Having never handled chalk and a diagram board before I felt a little anxious as to how I should succeed; but it went quite well. Home to tea and found Polly immensely rejoiced at the success, and not a little relieved at having this one cause of anxiety the less -- dear creature!
