May 12th.
Sat to Watkins 337 for my photograph. Dined with Spencer at the St. George's Hotel, Albemarle St. -- present Huxley, Tyndall, Hooker, 338 Masson, Bain, an American (Prof. Youmans), 339 and ourselves. Got Huxley, Tyndall and Spencer to promise contributions to the Fortnightly.
Saturday 13 May.
The First Number of the Fortnightly appeared. We went to the Royal Academy. Charles and Gertrude dined with us and the Aunts came in the evening.
Sunday 14 May.
Wrote letters. Spencer came to lunch. In the afternoon Lord Houghton, Crompton, Beesly, FitzJames Stephen, Warren, Bagehot, and Mr. and Mrs. Martin called. 340 Kept up talk and tea from three to 7! We then packed up, for our start to Eastbourne to-morrow.
