Monday 21st.
Started at 9 for Pau; agreeable English family (MacKinnan) in the train. Reached Pau at 2. Hotel de France -- only a room au troisi'e8me to be had. Went to the coiffeur and had hair cut -- badly -- then called on Mrs. Lehmann 572 -- out. Rambled along the Park and Terrace with beautiful view of the Pyrenees not unlike the view from Berne platform. Fierce storm came on. While waiting under an arcade for shelter amused by watching the market people -- the pigs and cattle.
Bought La Estrella by Fernan Caballero and a pocket French and Spanish Dict. Dined at the table d'h'f4te, and went to Mrs. Lehmann to tea. Chat and music till 10.
Tuesday 22 January.
After a light breakfast had a delicious walk along the Park and sat under the castle to bask in the sun -- weather superb. At 12 went to Mrs. Lehmann to lunch, and left Polly with her while I went to call on Savage 573 and his wife: found him very poorly, hating every place he went to with the true invalid's impatience. He was very grateful to me for the visit. After chatting an hour with him returned and walked with Polly and Mrs. L. in her delightful garden with the grand panorama of the mountains. Then we left her and went through the town, on to the place where the soldiers were exercising and the band was playing. Dined with Mrs. L. cozily.
Wednesday 23 January.
Went over to Mrs. L. to say goodbye. Walked with her in the garden and she finally walked with us to the station. Bayonne at 3 -- Biarritz at 4. Went out to see sunset. Polly felt headache coming on, went to bed early.
