Tuesday 20 August 1878
Sch'fcle. Vol. IV. Lawn Tennis. Mrs. Congreve to lunch. Walk with Polly when she left. Archiv f'fcr Psychiatrie. Gibbon. 124 Jacquemont. 125
Wednesday 21 August 1878
Sch'fcle. Vol. IV. Godalming. Archiv. At 6 Tom Trollope and his wife came on a visit. Pleasant reminiscences and talk.
Thursday 22 August 1878
After a chatty breakfast we all took a walk to Hambledon Church and home by the wood. Then Mrs. Rudd showed us over the school. 126 After lunch we went to Tennyson who took us to the spring and then read two of his new poems; most interesting visit. The Du Mauriers to dinner. Singing.
A cardinal going to the window one fine July morning exclaims: Non dies per vantarmi, ma oggie bellissima giornata!
Mrs. Thistlethwaite at a country house with Gladstone. As the party returned from Church she suddenly asked "Where's Gladstone?" "Stayed for Communion." "Has he? D--n it, then I'll take it too!"
A child delighting in some delicious pears exclaimed, "I could eat a million of them!" "Non, il n'y a que Dieu qui pourrait en manger un million!"
Du Maurier when he lost sight of one eye consulted a Belgian oculist -- a cold, hard, catholic, who although knowing he was a poor student, took the largest fee each time, and after some weeks examined the other eye, and said, patting an Italian greyhound as he spoke: "You seem a courageous young man, and I may tell you that one day when I told a young man what I am going to tell you, he blew his brains out at my door. Your other eye is going, and I advise you to seek some employment in which eyesight will not be much needed." He then made evident signs that the interview was ended, took his fee, and pulled off his skull cap to bow him out. 127

Chat at breakfast and walk on Sand Hill. The Trollopes left at 11. Walk. Drove to Guildford -- splendid afternoon. I read Morrison's Gibbon aloud. Archiv f'fcr Psychiatrie.
