Thursday 25 October 1877
Horrible weather all day. Reached Six Mile Bottom at 5. Party to dinner -- music in the evening.
The difference between Universalists and Unitarians. The one think God too good to d--n people, the other think themselves too good to be d----d.
Three men on a raft being swept down Niagara. "Can no one sing a hymn?" "No." "Nor a prayer?" "No." "We must do something religious -- let's make a collection."
An old man left his property to his nephew but with a life rent of it to an old woman of 80, bedridden. When the will was read the Nephew rose and said "I take ye all to witness that I'll bide the Lord's time."
A Frenchman entered the hotel salon at Chamouny declaring he had just made an expedition up Mont Blanc. "Vous avez fait l'ascension?" "Je crois bien!" "Jusqu'au sommet?" "Pas pr'e9cis'e9ment jusqu'au sommet -- mais jusqu'au Montanvert."
A very merry party on board a Cunard Steamer. Plenty of stories told; one man never smiled nor made a remark. The capt. asked him why this was. "Why you see, sir, I'm a liar myself."
Friday 26 October 1877
Sedley Taylor 751 came to Halls, and played and read at the Penny Reading which Hall got up for the farm servants etc. I recited [Chesnut Horse], [Garrick and the Cock] and the Frenchman at the station. Lawn Tennis. Read Deronda.
Saturday 27 October 1877
Johnnie, Sedley Taylor, Prof. Stewart 752 etc. guests. great fun and interesting talks. Lawn Tennis. Deronda.
