Letter Content

GHL Diary, London, 31 May 1878
MS: Mrs. Robert Nuttall. Hitherto unpublished.
Dined at the Goschens' to meet the Crown Prince and Princess of Germany: 72 22 at dinner and a number of swells and celebrities afterwards.
Dean Stanley, Bishop of Peterborough, 73 Lyon Playfairs, 74 Froude, Trollope, Kinglake, 75 Sir Garnet and Lady Wolseley, Lord and Lady Ripon, 76 Lord Bridport, 77 Morley, Mrs. Ponsonby, Mdle. de Perpignon. Prince and Princess very gracious, and talked a great deal to Polly, reproaching her for not having let them know when we were in Berlin and both begging when they said [goodbye] that the next time we came we would let them know. I told her about her [English laxity in religion] -- much to her amusement. She said she knew it. It was her friendship for Strauss. I sat next to Mrs. Ponsonby and Froude at dinner. Very gay. Home at 12 -- knocked up.
