Wednesday 10 April 1878
Tito Vignoli. 40 Vol IV. Revue scientifique. Johnnie Cross gave dinner at the Devonshire club: -- Sidgwick, Hall, Bridges, Walter Morrison, 41 Alex Sellar, 42 and Henry James. 43 Capital talk and stories. Walked home at 12 in a downpour.
Mat Arnold when at College bathed in a river in front of a village. The clergyman came to remonstrate. Mat quite naked waved the towel gracefully and with quiet seriousness said, Is it possible that you see anything indelicate in the human form divine?
Lord Ernest Bruce at a ball at the Tuileries was made uneasy by the attentions of the Emperor to his wife. Saw them disappear from the ball room. Followed and was pulled up by a sentinel. On ne passe pas monsieur. Mais permettez, permettez. On ne passe pas. Cette dame, je suis le mari. Raison de plus!

Tito Vignoli. Vol IV. Music party at the Grosvenor Gallery: Joachim, Piatti, Strauss, Hall'e9 and Mad. Joachim. Large group of acquaintances. Dined at Tennysons: Lord Acton and Annie Thackeray and husband. In the evening large party: the Monteagles, 46 Garnett Wolseleys, Cowper
Temples, etc. Tennyson read Boadicea, Maud and the Revenge. Home at 12.

Spencer. Vol IV. Concert: Schumann's quintett, Chopin Serenade for violin cello and piano. Beethoven's Kreutzer. Joachim, Piatti, Strauss, Krebs and Frl. Janotha 47 (first appearance). Mad. Joachim sang.
Sunday 14 April 1878
Both had headache. Tr'fcbner.
Lord Acton, Sir Garnett and Lady Wolseley, Mrs. Priestley, Kate Field, Moritz, Mr. and Mrs. Gurney, Smith, Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Liebreich, Mr. and Mrs. Cox, Frl. Redeker, Dr. Simon, Mrs. Lankester, Ray Lankester, Shadworth Hodgson, 48 Croom Robertson, Henrietta Rintoul, Alice Helps, Mrs. and Miss Busk, Mad. Moscheles, 49 Mrs. Felix Moscheles, Kegan Paul -- 27 People. Redeker and Liebreich sang.
A Frenchman looking at a half-naked 'e9plor'e9e Mary Magdalene exclaimed "Oh! si c'est l'e0 l'amour divin, je le connais!"

Spencer. Mrs. Congreve to lunch. We went to a music party at Leighton's: Joachim, Piatti, Hall'e9, and Janotha. Mad. Joachim sang. Talked to the Chief Justice, 51 the Percy Wyndhams, Mignon, 52 A'efd'e9, 53 Millais, Mrs. Ponsonby etc. Home at 6.30. Polly read her m.s. Gavarni Les Fourberies de Femmes. 54

"Brain." Vol IV. Went to see the Turner Drawings some very fine; most of them uninteresting; more like confectionary than Nature. Park.

Thursday 18 April 1878
Birthday spent very quietly. Walk in Park and drive to Willesden. Read Kosmos and the Village on the Cliff. Polly read Green's Hist. of England aloud.
Friday 19 April 1878
Headache prevented all work. After lunch we went to see the Calls, on the way picked up Browning and drove him in the park. Heavenly day, mild as June. Sigismund [Kind und Welt.] 56 Annie Thackeray [The Village on the Cliff.] 57 Green Hist. of England.
Saturday 20 April 1878
Horwicz Analysen. Vol IV. Tremendous rain. Cleared about 3 when we drove in Park and walked in Kensington Gardens. The Village on the Cliff. Green Hist. of England.
Letter from Lytton. At the ceremony of his unveiling the statue of Lord Canning at Calcutta after his speech an old judge approached him with tears in eye and voice and said "Poor Lord Canning, if he could but have lived to see this day." 58

A little girl praised for her accurate account of the Fall slipped her hand into that of the praiser and looking up in his face said "I know why Adam and Eve were sent away -- because he ate the peel."
Lady Colvile overheard a rough exclaim "Once a Jew always a Jew: give me Beaconsfield."
An American said of the Rajahs "Those fellows have no more idea of time than a sitting hen."
