My dear Mr. Ralston
We knew of your illness while you were still laid low in Paris, and were so far comforted about you as to learn that you had a mother's tendance. 435 We saw the announcement of your return, and though I remembered well your pretty project about Switzerland and did not like thinking that you had been obliged to renounce it, I hoped and imagined that your health was restored. It is a sad disappointment to learn that you are still a sufferer -- and from a complaint which we too, between us, have had enough bodily hints of, to experience a lively fellow-feeling with a friend who is more severely afflicted.
It is some relief for you that you are able to write, but I feel that your days must be trying -- I hope the nights are less so.
Your letter is a welcome assurance at least that you believe in our caring about any good or evil that befals you, and we are both heartily wishing that we may soon hear of the good after this smart visitation of evil.
