August 9. 78.
My dear Mr. William
I think that the specimen page of [The Spanish Gypsy] is quite satisfactory. As to the [Jubal] volume, there will, I hope be added matter enough to save you from difficulty as to the size. I should like to see the proofs.
Your saying that the printing is being [pushed on] alarms me lest the corrected copy of [Daniel Deronda] which I send by today's post should be at all too late. I could have sent it four months ago, but I thought it better to reserve it till it was actually wanted, lest there might be any mislaying. I also send a corrected copy of [Jubal,] to be printed from.
It is important that the corrections in [Deronda] should be carried out perfectly, since this edition is to last, and I shall be much obliged to you if you will send me word whether my corrected copy has arrived in time.
I assure you, we find your execution of von Moltke's business very zealous and punctual. Mr. Lewes, with his usual indulgence, insists on answering the letters of which I get the benefit, but you must believe in my tacit sense of obligation.
Yours always truly
M. E. Lewes.
'abOn second thought I enclose the corrections of [Jubal] on a scrap of paper.'bb
