My dear Major Blackwood
It is very pleasant to know that you like my old-fashioned Dodsons. The comedy inevitably diminishes as the lives of Tom and Maggie advance, but I suppose no book without its share of tragedy ever took a strong hold on the public mind.
Looking into the Clerical Scenes, the other day, I found an awkward misprint at p. 95. volume II: "prepare an oration," for "prepare an ovation." 480 Will you be so kind as to ask Mr. Simpson to note this, for the benefit of the printers?
Mudie seems to be beginning a small warfare against us, as I dare-say you have heard from Mr. Langford. 481 There had need be some authors and publishers strong enough to resist his tyranny, which threatens to thrust poor books down the throats of the public, and to strangle good ones.
