My dear Sir
Thanks for your kind letter which came with the proofs last week. If I were capable of being much cheered just now, your expressions of interest in Felix Holt would contribute to the effect. But I am in that state of utter distrust and anxiety about my work which is usually the painful accompaniment of authorship with me until the last word of the last page has been written. Still it does gratify me to learn that your uncle, Mr. John Blackwood has thorough satisfaction in the renewal of our business relations which have always been made doubly agreeable to me by high regard for him.
Will you be so good as to say to Mr. Simpson for me that I believe I have underlined the brief bits of epistolary correspondence in the first and second volumes as if they were to be printed in italics after the fashion of the old novels. But this is undesirable now that people are unaccustomed to it, and therefore I will beg him to let the printer know that he need not notice my interlineations. 456
Today, just before we left Dorking I got the letters from Sir A. Alison and Mr. J. Hill Burton, 457 which Mr. John Blackwood had enclosed for me, and am much obliged to him for making the inquiries. I remain, my dear Sir
