Shotter Mill | near Petersfield | June 22. 71.
My dear Sir Henry
Many thanks for your kind letter, which has reached me this morning. Your goodness has always emboldened me to trouble you, and I have found my advantage in the last instance as well as in others. The doses of quinine seem to suit me, and I am altogether more comfortable than I was when I presented my grumbling self to you in town.
We shall not, I think, be in our usual home again before you depart on your Icelandic voyage. But if in the interval I should be in any new bodily trouble, your kindly expressed permission will induce me to make a journey for the sake of applying to you.
We English are usually in some discontent about our weather as well as our Government. Every one, I suppose, now thinks that we have had enough rain, and I fear that Londoners find more discomfort from the incessant showers and storms than we do. Our soil is so sandy, that the roads are never unpleasant to walk on.
Mr. Lewes is in an altogether flourishing condition, enjoying all things from his breakfast to the highest problems in statics and dynamics. I think I have never seen him in such undisturbed health for many years -- though of course he feels the tether that Time gradually shortens. He has to leave off study early, to avoid exhaustion. Always, my dear Sir Henry,
Yours with sincere regard and obligation
M. E. Lewes.
