Richmond | December 9.
Dear Sara
I think you will be interested to see this letter from Varnhagen as a remarkable specimen of handwriting from a man more than seventy and as the opinion of a learned Goethean on Mr. Lewes's book. It is a peep into the extra-Rosehill world, and I know you like such peeps. Send it me back again.
I also send you a bit of a letter from Mr. Pigott containing a rich story about Dickens and Scheffer -- not of course to be put into print. You will find it all the more delicious if you remember Scheffer's style of painting -- the spiritual, d'e9charn'e9 faces he puts into his pictures. 769
Ever yours affectionately
Marian.
Burn Mr. Pigott's letter.
