Dear Sara
Where are you? I fear I must have written to you from Little Hampton under some misunderstanding of your letter received there. The sad fact was, that after I had given your letter a first hasty reading as breakfast was beginning, Mr. Lewes snatched it up along with his own letters and carried it away, and though I asked him for it very shortly after, he could not find it. 110 Such magical disappearances are effected now and then by the sleight of hand of some spirit that doesn't rap. The consequence was that I wrote under the impression that you were coming to town about the middle of September to stay a month. I begin to think now that I made a wide mistake, and am anxious that you should not attribute any stupidity in my letter to some other cause than the true one. I could not have seen much of you in any case, as it is my plan now to avoid any other distraction than that of our family talk and walks, but I am truly sorry if I have missed the pleasure of kissing you and hearing something about you from your own lips, by reason of that unlucky snatch at the letters.
We are going to take a second and last look at the Exhibition (the pictures only) tomorrow, feeling that such an opportunity is not likely to come again in our lives. Best love to all from
