Wednesday.
My dear Sara,
I have had a severe headache since Saturday evening 545 and have been afraid to write to you under its influence lest I should alarm you for
Strauss. I am quite free from pain this afternoon and full of hope that by dint of living on mutton chops and adopting Zeno's philosophy I shall be able to ward off these time-wasting visitations. Your letter to Mrs. Bray this morning ended with the melancholy information that nothing more had been heard of Mr. P., but I comfort myself with thinking that the week has not yet expired. I could have offered a hecatomb, like Pythagoras, when I heard that Mr. Hennell was really to have £300 under his fingers -- it was just the stimulus I wanted.
I suppose you do not mind about my having any more manuscript until Mr. Bray goes to Clapton again (he is in London to-day). 546 If you do, the second volume is quite ready. The last few sections were written under anything but favourable circumstances. They are not Strauss's best thoughts, nor are they put into his translator's best language, but I have not courage to imitate Gibbon -- put my work in the fire 547 and begin again.
Thank you for the pencillings. I have just glanced over them already, and I see that many are obvious and important emendations. I shall finish examining them tonight. Pray send me word as soon as Mr. Parkes comes to deeds instead of words.
My head is in a very giddy, stupid state as usual after severe pain. I must go and rest now, for I have been hearing of sorrows that I cannot help making mine all this morning and am quite overdone. I will write by and bye in a merrier strain. Love to all.
