My dear Nephew
Thank you for your letter filled with details which are very interesting to me. Memory is keen about those old days which were also our young days, and I am glad of any sign that those I used to care about long ago are well and happy now. It is pleasant to me to think of your Aunt Houghton living with your mother and being in the midst of her nearest friends. Your two younger brothers 524 I have no remembrance of, but all the rest are before me as they used to be more than half my life ago -- an image strangely different from what exists now.
I don't know which scientific department you are most interested in among the proceedings of the British Association. But we were reading last night a report of Mr. Huggins's lecture on the results of the spectrum analysis, which could hardly be exceeded in impressiveness. 525
It is kind of you to wish we had been there. Instead of that, we have been having a farewell month with our son, who is now on board the mail steamer bound for South Africa. 526
