Dear Mr. Browning
Thanks for your kind letter from Rome, 170 which I found on our return home, the other evening. For we too have been vagrants, and have wandered with cold winds for our company as far as Vienna. We set out on the 14th of March and only got back last Friday. I suppose the time will come when you will have had enough of wandering to and fro upon the earth, as we are beginning to feel that we have. But while you are young and strong your friends in England must be content to get now and then a flying "Blatt" from you in your holidays.
I see you have been finding time to lecture for the outer world on "The Thirty Years War," and have kindly held me in remembrance as one interested in what you do.
A propos of books, I think very highly of Emerson's new volume. 171 There is enough gospel to serve one for a year in one or two of the Essays -- those on Domestic life, Eloquence, Farming etc.
