The Priory. 21 January 1869.
It was very pretty of you to think of me at all, while you were in Paris, and still prettier to choose me to write to on your birthday. 5 Such proofs of regard are much valued by me. The getting older brings some new satisfactions, and among these I find the growth of a maternal feeling towards both men and women who are much younger than myself. In this way the roots of affection may continue to spread as long as one's mind last. An affection springing from the perpetuity of relations is the main strength and the main regulation of life. . . .
