Dear Mr. Browning
Thanks for your letter. I am glad to know of your safe return from those ultra-civilized regions where, I understand, women are in good practice as lawyers. A week or two ago we had a Russian lady 110 here, a perfect Hebe in face, who by favour of Kirchhoff is studying mathematics in the University at Heidelberg. Her husband was with her -- himself clever and scientific -- contending for women's equal right of study.
But I dare say that your rapid journeying brought you into no contact with these portents of Russia's future. As to your being cold, when your friends predicted that you would be dying of heat, we have so often gone through that kind of experience, that I regard the heat of Europe as a myth, and always prepare for cold at all seasons.
I imagine that you have brought home new photographs and that you intend to put them into your precious book, which has been carefully cherished in a warm shawl during your absence. I despatched it last night by the P.D.C. to the Railway, the only plan of transmission that I could discover.
We are still in a state of suspense about our poor boy, whose condition has changed its phases very often since we saw you. I fear that he is weaker than ever, and in a state that discourages all hopefulness. 111
