Dearest Mrs. Cross
I write to you on a little errand of my own, and will not pretend to be less self-seeking than I am. Two years ago, or more, our dear "jeunesse" Florence 312 told me that her doctor had given her a delightfully soothing pink ointment for the skin. If she has the prescription still by her, I should be very grateful for it.
Having frankly made use of you, let me say that I love you for something else than your usefulness to me, and shall be doubly grateful if you will pour me out a few sentences about yourself. It is too long since I had that gift of friendship from you, perhaps because my silence has deserved silence in return.
Perhaps Nephew John has told you that we go up to town on Thursday, and set off again into Wales on the Saturday -- only for a brief space, at the end of which we shall settle down for the winter. [The rest of the page has been cut away.]
