MS: Girton College, Cambridge.
My dear Mrs. Hamilton
We should have liked, of all things, to have had the delicious drive you kindly offer us, but I am vexed to be obliged to give it up on the ground of an engagement which is likely to be good for nothing. 210
Mr. Lewes has made an engagement with Mr. Layton that we should go to see his house about 3 o'clock, and after giving this trouble to our neighbour we must not venture to change our hour. I have not the least belief that Mr. Layton's 211 house would do for us -- indeed I am disgusted with all places when I compare their ugliness with the charms of our lawn, which looks lovelier to me every day. Alas!
Yours very truly
M. E. Lewes.
I have not thanked you yet in word, though I have in feeling, for planning this pleasure for us.
