Dear Friend
I have to thank you for two kind attentions. First, for the magnificent volume of the [Memoirs,] 663 a loan which made me feel so responsible that I was anxious to return it as soon as I had looked through it. We left it in the hands of your Concierge last Saturday, and I trust that it is unblemished.
Next, for the Pen and Pencil volume 664 which came yesterday when I had just returned from Guildford and gone to bed ailing from a chill 665 -- the frequent result to me of outgoings in our May weather.
How little the views of your Aubrey House give one the idea of the London [residence] which House agents recommend! I don't wonder at your regrets in parting with it. And the members of your [Club] must be glad to have a visible memorial of their meetings in that unique home with one of the gentlest of presidents.
