My dear Daughter
At last you see I am away from town, listening to the silence. I was getting much stronger and finding interest in life, but a fortnight ago I fell ill and have not yet recovered my former level.
Your letter has filled up a blank place that was waiting for it and filled it cheerfully (according to the measure of this troublous world) since it tells me that you are well enough to bear fatigue. I should have liked to know more exactly how far the enemy gout has been subdued, and whether the return to England in this bitter season of May has left you without twinges. You will perhaps by and by go to town for a little while, and will let me hear of your movements.
Meanwhile, please thank the Rector from me for that kind letter he wrote me long ago 246 when I received all goodness without making any sign of gratitude.
I can well imagine the sort of shock Rome gave you on a first visit. The greatest relief is to get to some point of view from which one can see the distant hills -- the everlasting hills one may call them by comparison with that changing surface of men's creation.
