My dear Mrs. Pattison
I have had rather a grand illness which has blotted out two months of my life. It came on me just after my return from the country where
I had been continually ailing. But I am well again, after my poor fashion of being well, and there is no good in telling of the episode except as a means of letting you know that I am better prepared than ever to enter into the calamity of ill health, which you see so much of.
I remembered that you had thought of being in town in October, and each Sunday brought you to mind with an agreeable expectation on my part. But your kind letter gives me an explanation of your non-appearance. Mr. Otter, on Sunday, could tell me nothing about you, except that the Rector had preached at Oxford three weeks ago, whence my great power of inference helped me to conclude that you were not any longer in Styria.
We are likely to be fixed here for the winter, so that I have a good chance of seeing you -- always a pleasure to me, as you know very well.
With much fellow-feeling to the Rector, and constant friendship to your more compact half called self,
