My dear Fanny
You have not, I dare say, heard that Chrissey has lost her little Leonard. 701 I have not yet been able to see her since his death owing to Father's absence with the carriage. I shall therefore go to Meriden on Tuesday when Father has set off on his Derbyshire journey. On Wednesday the carriage is to go to the Maker's to have a crazy wheel rectified, so that I am driven to Thursday as my only time for seeing you. I must return home in the evening so do not take any trouble about a bed for me.
I am sorry to hear that Henry is still looking very poorly. I hope the spirit of contradiction will enable you to be fat and hearty and that will at all events be some compensation. Father has taken three pills as a profitable mode of occupying the Sunday -- a strictly Catholic proceeding of mortifying the body to escape the spiritual correctives administered by Dr. Davis 702 -- My love is with you. May it fold you in the soft down of its wings and keep off a little the cold winds and the hard blows of this working day world.
