Christmas Day 1864.
Dear Mrs. Malleson
Yesterday, as I was cutting some ivy in our frost-nipped garden, I thought of you -- how you had brought me beautiful plants to cheer me as prettiest signs of your good will towards me, for these Christmases past. Then I thought, "Ah, she is gone too far now, for me to hope that she can show me her face again, which was quite as pleasant to look at as the flowers." And precisely when I came in from my ivy-cutting, I saw a plant -- a beautiful one, standing on the slab in the hall. Of course I knew you had sent it before I saw the initials.
I have given you that history of my thoughts that you may understand better how welcome your remembrance was. Thank you, dear Mrs. Malleson, Perhaps nothing but a more intimate peep into my desponding nature -- a peep not desirable -- could let you know fully how much good such attentions as yours have always been to me -- how much help they afford me.
I wish I knew Mr. Malleson well enough to send my kind regards to him, 633 as Mr. Lewes sends his to you. Perhaps some day I shall see you again. Till then, I am
