My dear Mrs. Benzon
Since it is a pleasure to your kind feelings to give me the beautiful scarf, it cannot but be a pleasure to me to wear it for your sake. And I think it will last my life, for I am fond of these silky meshy things washed and washed again.
That was true friendship to refuse a letter of introduction to us. Pray go on and do likewise unless there happen to be an exceptionally charming applicant.
The penitent sinner sends his love and I am always
Yours affectionately
M. E. Lewes.
